The 2026 SEO checklist for service businesses

Twelve moves that still move the needle when generative search ate half the SERP.

Search has changed more in the last 18 months than it had in the previous decade. AI overviews ate the top of the SERP, zero-click queries hit 60%, and yet the moves that actually grow a service business' organic pipeline are roughly the same as 2019 - only more obvious.

What still works

  • Pages built around one tight buyer-intent query, not topic clusters that hedge.
  • Real expertise on the page - names, faces, real case numbers, citable claims.
  • Internal linking that reflects how your sales team actually pitches the offer.
  • Local citations that match your Google Business Profile down to the punctuation.

None of these are clever. All of them get skipped because they're boring. AI overviews promote pages that look like they were written by humans answering a buyer's question; the cheapest competitive moat is being one of those pages.

What's quietly stopped working

Topic cluster bloat. Thin location pages. Blog posts that exist only to host a keyword. Backlinks from publishers Google has already discounted. Tactics that won in 2019 - when the index was less crowded and AI didn't summarize - are now active negatives.

If your SEO retainer's deliverables list reads identical to one from 2019, the retainer is the problem.
